SLEEPY 4 KIDS
or… how a visit to the dentist can turn into a beautiful dream.
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, was afraid of the dark. Harry Potter was afraid of the Dementors. Little children are afraid of the Bogeyman. I’m afraid of badgers and my wife is afraid of … well, yes… she’s afraid of the dentist.
Who doesn’t remember the „little bee” or the specific smell in the dentist's office? Even I get goose bumps when I remember how I felt as a child when my mother took me to the dentist. Brrr…
According to statistics, over 65% of children and over 20% of adult patients manifest fear of the dentist.
Luckily, recent technological discoveries come in support of the parents and give our children the possibility to have a stomatological treatment performed in a friendly environment. With the help of the latest sedation techniques, which have absolutely no adverse effects, the visit to the dentist takes place in a general state of calm and relaxation.
What is SLEEPY 4 KIDS? In order to eliminate the discomfort of children during the consult, dentists use sedation methods to facilitate their relaxation and to take away their fear. Stomatological sedation makes it possible to perform a treatment which normally would have required several sessions in just one session, two at the most. How does the child feel during sedation?
The child feels no pain, seems asleep, but is conscious and may collaborate with the doctor, may answer questions. In exchange, he/she does not perceive any sounds, smells and, most importantly, senses nothing during the dental intervention. When the child wakes up, he/she is rested and feels no discomfort about the visit to the dentist.
This is why this technique is also known as SLEEPY 4 KIDS.
No risk whatsoever!
Sedation is free of any discomfort and has no side effects. And because we are also parents, we know that nothing is too much when it comes to making sure that the risks are minimum for your child. That’s why our clinic is equipped with a monitor and a defibrillator and your child is permanently monitored during the dentist’s intervention. Moreover, the team of specialist anaesthetists with which we collaborate is made up of professionals with a vast and long experience as pediatricians in children’s hospitals. Before starting any treatment, we will of course go over the medical history of your child. During the intervention, he/she will be monitored permanently. If the tests do not recommend sedation, our specialists may recommend certain alternative treatments, such as deep relaxation psychological techniques or even hypnosis.
Dream with eyes wide open
or… What types of sedation can we make available for your child?
GAS INHALATION Gas inhalation is a type of conscious sedation recommended when the child is only slightly anxious and tense. It is performed using the special MASTER FLUX device and it implies the inhalation of a combination of nitrogen protoxide and oxygen called laughing gas, also known as FUNNY GAS, a mild analgesic gas.
FUNNY GAS is administered through a small mask that is placed on the face in such a way as to cover the nose. One sheep, two sheep, three Bazoo… four Pino… five Bazoo…Once inhaled, FUNNY GAS induces calm and relaxation which lasts throughout the dental intervention. Patients usually describe a sensation of floating in a dream-like state.
Nitrogen protoxide is a completely safe and healthy substance for both children and adults; it has a gentle and non-toxic action. At the end of the intervention, the dentist administers the child oxygen to make sure that the gas is completely eliminated from the body. Inhalation of FUNNY GAS is the most efficient and safe sedation method which gives the child a positive experience during the dental treatment. The advantages of inhaling FUNNY GAS are:
• It acts quickly – in just a few minutes after the inhalation, the child becomes calm and relaxed
• It is flexible – sedation may be easily controlled until the child dreams with eyes wide open ![]()
• The recuperation time is short – after completing the treatment, the doctor stops the administration of nitrogen protoxide and administers only oxygen for a few minutes. In maximum 5 minutes after interrupting the administration of nitrogen protoxide, the substance is eliminated completely from the body, and the effects disappear entirely. Children may perform any activity after visiting the dentist and adults may even drive home!
ANALGOSEDATION Analgosedation is a type of conscious sedation by intravenous injection of a calming substance and is recommended for children with high anxiety levels towards dental treatment. It may only be used by specialist anaesthetists or oromaxillofacial surgeons with special certification. The little patient no longer perceives what is happening around him/her but may cooperate and answer the doctor’s questions. This type of sedation is deeper than inhalation of laughing gas. The doctor controls the sedation level and may reduce or increase the medication if needed, the effects being instantaneous. At the end of the treatment, the child cannot remember anything that happened during the visit.
The advantages of analgosedation:
• It is efficient – the drugs are administered directly into the bloodstream, being more effective than inhaled ones
• It is flexible – the medication level may be reduced or increased as needed
• It is deep – this technique is used in the case of children who have high anxiety levels
For longer sessions, of 90 minutes, our specialists use a combination of the two types of sedation, inhalation of FUNNY GAS and intravenous analgosedation.
Pino and Bazoo are not afraid of the dentist!
