The latest studies in dental medicine show that crooked, crowded or gapped teeth are one of the most important dental health and aesthetics problems among children. Even though they appear in the first years of the child, awareness of these problems only occurs during the teenage years. Apart from medical complications, children facing orthodontic problems are affected emotionally and may develop an inferiority complex.
Doctors say that these dental problems most often lead to stomach illnesses due to faulty mastication, cavities and pronunciation imperfections. The main causes of dental malposition are:
1. inappropriate diet
2. inheriting large teeth on a smaller jaw or smaller teeth on a large jaw
3. bad habits such as: finger sucking, nail biting…etc.
Statistics show that currently 1 in 2 children needs dental braces.
Depending on the type, dental braces can be mobile or fixed.
Depending on the place where the brackets are applied, fixed dental braces can be:
• external or vestibular (brackets are placed in front of the teeth and can be metallic or ceramic)
• lingual or invisible (brackets are placed behind the teeth)
Starting at age 4-6, any orthodontic intervention is made in order to ensure a harmonious growth of the arcades, and implicitly a harmonious development of the teeth and jaw. These interventions are sometimes accompanied by exercises with the speech therapist. Between 6 and 10 – the period of mixed dentition, the purpose of the interventions, apart from a harmonious dental development, is to guide the eruption of permanent teeth. For children of these ages specialists mostly use mobile dental braces, which also stimulate the development of the bones of the maxilla and mandible. Starting with age 11, fixed dental braces can be used, which correct the position of teeth of the gaps between them. Fixed dental braces are made up of brackets (plates that attach to the tooth) and arches that unite the brackets. At a young age mobile dental braces or fixed dental braces specially designed for children are recommended. After11-12, fixed dental braces may be used.
Rules to follow when your child is wearing mobile dental braces
1. The mobile orthodontic braces must be kept at all times in the oral cavity, with the following exceptions: while eating or practicing sports
2. In the first 7-10 days after the application of the mobile dental braces, the patient may experience a slight hypersalivation (excess saliva) or difficulty swallowing the saliva. These small discomforts disappear completely after some time if the braces are worn correctly
3. Activation of the mobile orthodontic braces is done with the special key received together with the dental braces, always in the direction of the arrow, according to the doctor’s indications. CAUTION: the braces must not be activated after a break, so as not to cause pain!
4. The hygiene of the braces: cleaning is done by washing with water and soap every time it is removed from the oral cavity. This is done using a hard brush and insisting on the edges, the spaces between the fragments and the screws. At the end, rinse the braces in lukewarm water. You can also use special cleaning tablets dissolved into water.
5. The hygiene of the oral cavity: clean each time you apply the braces in the oral cavity. Additional cleaning methods may also be used – dental floss and mouth wash. A medical check-up for professional hygienization is recommended every 3 months or when necessary
6. Always come in for a check-up in case of problems such as:
7. Inability to apply the braces correctly, according to the doctor’s indications
8. Instability of the braces in the mouth
9. Deterioration of the braces
10. Any type of pain
11. In order to restore quickly correct pronunciation, speech exercises are recommended (reading out loud, rarely, pronouncing the words correctly and repeating the difficult ones).
