or… The first visit to the dentist

One of the most frequent questions that our paediatric dentistry specialists hear is: What is the best age for the first visit to the dentist? Our specialists recommend making the first visit with your child to the dentist at age 1.

Every parent knows how important it is to prevent, by regular dental check-ups, the illnesses that could interfere with the health of your little ones. But, as we have already mentioned here, we all know how difficult it is to get our children accustomed to a new environment or a stranger.

Even more so as this visit is associated with suffering or a sense of pain. Although it may seem too early for such a visit, statistics indicate that the incidence of cavities, especially baby bottle cavities at infantile ages is rising.

And it is also important for you as a parent to get advice from the doctor on:

1. The risk factors for tooth decay (for instance, inappropriate foods, baby falling asleep with milk or sweetened juices in the baby bottle, etc.)

2. The possibility of testing the saliva and analyzing the risk of the appearance of tooth decay

3. Learning the correct brushing techniques and getting practical advice to help form healthy habits at an early age.

4. The major impact that wrong habits can have on the teeth (finger sucking, nail biting, etc.)

In Romania, children are most often brought for a first dental consult when they already experience toothache. Unfortunately, in this case, the child will associate the circumstances, the environment and the doctor with the feeling of pain, will present fear of the dentist and will have a hard time forgetting this association.

At DENT ESTET 4 KIDS we made it our purpose to change this wrong mentality, by implementing the Happy Visit concept in our clinic dedicated exclusively to young patients.

Happy Visit is the „pre-visit” or the „familiarization visit” and is actually a fun and educational visit.

During this visit, children are shown the place - especially designed for them, the playrooms, the games and toys, the personalized offices with animations for children. Last but not least, the little ones will meet the friendly staff of the clinic.

Our paediatricians recommend 2 to 5 Happy Visit sessions in the case of children who present fear of the dentist.

During the Happy Visit we play together, we make a lot of fun things, we invent all kinds of  topics for discussion depending on each child’s personality and temperament, we do all that our specialized staff was instructed to do in order to get the children accustomed to the role of little patients:

• we will count together the teeth

• we will meet Pino and Bazoo

• we will play with the dental chair

• we will explain the experiences that will come next

• we will learn together songs

• we will draw our favourite tooth brush

Happy Visit, the playful techniques and the procedures turned into games are especially designed to be able to develop, over time, a pleasant and healthy relationship between the doctor and your child.
